Of the few known artworks made by Colombe, is now possible to envision this extraordinary canvas, which represents the scene of “La Buona Ventura” and is considered to be the painter’s masterpiece and with no doubt the first of his known works. The rightful paternity of the painting is aknowledged by the inscription present on the paper held in the young man’s left hand: “Francesco Colombo di Lorena Pingebat” (identical signature to the San Girolamo’s, unequivocal italianisation of the patronymic François Colombe du Lys.
An important architecture frames the scene, which is clearly inspired by Caravaggio’s manner, here magnifically interpreted with fresh and fast brush strokes, borrowed as much from Claude Vignon as George de la Tour
